Handmade Ceramics
I create functional slab-built stoneware, a technique combining hand-built idiosyncrasies and artistic expression. I draw patterns and garden imagery and make silkscreens that enable me to repeat my drawings across different pieces. I use slip to transfer these patterns onto raw clay, followed by layers of underglazes, glazes, and stains to complete each item.
Each piece begins with careful sketches and many glaze & slip tests, as well as consideration for its intended function. I ask myself practical questions: Does the item require handles for ease of use, will it be walked upon, or must it withstand extreme outdoor conditions such as heat and ice? These functional requirements guide the design and construction process.
These designs are transferred onto the clay surface through silkscreening with slip, allowing intricate motifs to become an integral part of each piece. Once the ware is constructed and the imagery is in place, I complete the process by firing the forms. After the initial firing, I hand-decorate each piece with layers of underglazes and glazes, adding depth and vibrancy to the surface. This approach results in unique, functional ceramics that reflect both careful craftsmanship and inspiration drawn from patterns and nature.
